Institute for Data Science in Oncology

At MD Anderson, we're unlocking the power of information to transform how we understand and treat cancer.

A new era in cancer care

The Institute for Data Science in Oncology, led by David Jaffray, Ph.D., and Caroline Chung, M.D., is transforming how we understand and treat cancer care.

Cancer is among the most complex diseases. Every patient’s treatment is shaped by biology, environment and treatment history. At the nation’s No. 1 hospital for cancer care, we are leading a bold approach through the Institute for Data Science in Oncology. Launched in November 2023, the institute harnesses artificial intelligence, big data and team science to improve outcomes for every patient.

Why data science matters

Each patient generates millions of data points. We bring these metrics together–in real time–to uncover hidden patterns, predict responses and personalize treatment.

“This is our future. And IDSO is paving the way.”

Monika Bickert learned firsthand how difficult facing cancer could be when her late husband, Philip Guentert, was diagnosed with stage IV kidney cancer in 2012. Now, she’s using her background in tech and involvement with MD Anderson’s Institute for Data Science in Oncology (IDSO) to help MD Anderson offer more personalized care.
